Project Scope

The Columbus Circle / 59th Street complex, comprised of two major subway lines overlaid at the center of New York City, recently underwent a major rehabilitation and reconfiguration completed in 2012 for all station spaces. Our scope of work included the lighting of platforms, stairs, passageways, mezzanines, escalators, entrances, waiting areas, control areas, and artwork in accordance with the latest edition of the New York City Transit Authority Station Planning and Design Guidelines. A defining feature of this project was our collaboration with Dattner and MTA Arts for Transit to develop and execute public art installations that distinguish this complex. DGA designed lighting for the colorful mural “Whirls and Twirls” by artist Sol LeWitt, and applied standard lighting elements in unique applications – such as the “tiaras” that complement flooring patterns, and the “oval” fixture arrays that ring mezzanine openings to the platform below.
